Bobath Konzept – ANDRUKONIS Physiotherapie & Orthopädie 1140 Wien

What is the Bobath concept?

The Bobath concept is a therapeutic approach used mainly in the treatment of people with neurological conditions such as stroke, multiple sclerosis or cerebral palsy. It was developed in the 1940s by Berta and Karel Bobath. The core of the concept is based on the idea that the human brain is capable of learning and adapting, which is known as neuroplasticity.

Therapists working according to the Bobath concept focus on identifying abnormal movement patterns and normalising them through targeted exercises and activities. The aim is to improve the patient’s motor skills and independence. The concept relies on an individual, holistic approach that takes into account not only physical but also psychological and social aspects.

Bobath therapy at ANDRUKONIS

Special further training is required in order to apply the Bobath concept as a physiotherapist. This training is handled differently in different countries, but in general it covers the following aspects:

Training content: The training provides in-depth knowledge of neurological conditions, the principles of neuroplasticity, the assessment and treatment of patients according to the Bobath concept, and specific treatment techniques.

Duration of the training: The duration of the training can vary. As a rule it comprises several courses or modules spread over a period of a few months up to a year.

Practical experience: In addition to formal training, practical experience is crucial. The Bobath concept requires a high degree of sensitivity, observational skill and adaptability.

Continuing education and supervision: Since the Bobath concept involves ongoing research and development, it is important for physiotherapists to continue their education regularly and to stay up to date with current practice. Supervision and exchange with experienced colleagues can also be very helpful in improving one’s own practice.

Bobath Therapy Vienna: costs

In our private physiotherapy practice we offer individual, high-quality treatments. Prices depend on the therapist’s qualifications and the complexity of the treatment, and we aim to keep them fair and transparent. With a medical prescription we handle the billing with your health insurer to relieve you of administrative work.

For home visits we charge a travel flat rate, which is also partly reimbursable.

Our goal: excellent treatment with minimal bureaucracy. We look forward to supporting you on your road to recovery.

Treatment process: how a Bobath session works

A Bobath treatment begins with a comprehensive assessment of the patient in order to determine individual needs and abilities. The therapist then applies personalised techniques aimed at restoring and improving movement and function. This often includes gentle guidance, specific movement exercises and positioning. The therapy is dynamic and continuously adapts to the patient’s progress and responses. The aim is to promote independence and confidence in everyday life.

Which exercises are used?

Within the Bobath concept, various exercises are carried out that aim to improve motor skills and function in patients with neurological impairments. Here are some examples of such Bobath concept exercises:

  • Balance exercises: These involve activities aimed at improving balance and coordination. Examples include sitting on a therapy ball or standing on an unstable surface.

  • Fine motor exercises: The aim is to improve hand and finger skills. This can include grasping and releasing objects or specific hand movements.

  • Walking exercises: Here the focus is on gait safety and coordination. The therapist can support the patient in developing safe and efficient step sequences.

  • Transfer exercises: These exercises focus on making the transition from one position to another easier, for example from a chair into bed.

  • Stretching and strengthening exercises: The aim is to increase flexibility and build muscle strength in order to allow better movement control.

  • Sensory integration: Various sensory stimuli such as touch, pressure or vibration are used to promote sensory awareness.

Useful information about the Bobath concept

The Bobath concept is a multidisciplinary therapeutic approach that focuses primarily on the treatment of people with neurological conditions.

Fundamentals and principles

The principles of the Bobath concept can be presented in expanded form as follows:

  • Neuroplasticity: This principle is based on the brain’s ability to reorganise itself after an injury or illness. It is the basis for regaining lost functions.

  • Individual and holistic treatment: Every patient is regarded as an individual with unique needs and abilities. The therapy takes physical, emotional and social aspects into account.

  • Active participation of the patient: Patients are actively involved in the therapy process. Targeted exercises and activities promote independence.

  • Promoting motor learning: The therapy supports the learning of new movement patterns and the improvement of motor skills.

  • Importance of sensory input: Sensory feedback is crucial for motor learning. The therapy uses different methods to improve sensory perception.

Goals of the Bobath concept in nursing care

The Bobath concept in nursing care aims to improve the quality of life of people with neurological impairments. The main goals include:

  • Promoting mobility and freedom of movement: Supporting patients in maintaining and improving their motor skills in order to achieve the greatest possible independence.

  • Prevention of secondary complications: Avoiding complications such as pressure sores, contractures or pneumonia through correct positioning and movement.

  • Support with everyday activities: Assistance with daily tasks, taking individual abilities into account, to promote independence and self-determination.

  • Pain management: Use of techniques to relieve pain and improve general well-being.

Key elements of Bobath therapy

Positioning
Positioning is essential in Bobath therapy for people with neurological impairments: it helps prevent secondary complications, promotes motor control and mobility, supports breathing and circulation, stimulates sensory perception and reduces pain. It enables independence, is adapted individually and is often supported by special aids.

Mobilisation
Mobilisation within Bobath therapy is a key aspect in promoting mobility and independence in patients with neurological impairments. This approach focuses on improving motor control and muscle coordination and on reducing spastic muscle patterns. Targeted movement exercises and techniques strengthen joint mobility and muscle power. Mobilisation also helps to prevent secondary complications such as joint stiffness and muscle wasting. It supports sensory perception and promotes neurological reorganisation. Throughout, the patient’s individual abilities and needs are taken into account in order to achieve maximum independence and functional autonomy in everyday life.

Frequently asked questions

A single Bobath therapy session usually lasts between 45 and 60 minutes. The exact duration can vary depending on the patient’s individual needs and goals as well as the focus of the particular session.

In Austria, Bobath therapy can be prescribed by specialists, in particular neurologists, paediatricians or rehabilitation physicians. These doctors assess the patient’s need and suitability for this specific form of therapy based on their medical condition and treatment goals.

The Bobath concept reaches its limits with patients who have severe, irreversible neurological damage or who are unable to cooperate. It cannot resolve all neurological deficits and is less effective for chronic conditions that do not respond to neuromuscular re-education. It also requires intensive collaboration between therapist and patient.

During Bobath treatment, individually adapted exercises and techniques are used to improve movement, coordination and muscle control in neurological patients. This includes sensory stimulation, balance and movement exercises, and assistance in promoting independence in everyday life.
