Dry needling is a specialised physiotherapeutic technique for treating myofascial trigger points, that is, painful areas of hardened muscle. Very fine, sterile needles are used to stimulate these points specifically in order to release tension, reduce pain and normalise muscle activity. No medication is injected.
At the start there is a detailed physiotherapeutic assessment in order to identify the affected muscles and relevant trigger points precisely. Posture, mobility and pain behaviour are checked and the muscles are tested manually.
Fine acupuncture needles are then inserted precisely into the relevant muscle areas. The muscles may be moved during the treatment. If the point is successfully needled, a brief muscle twitch may occur, depending on the muscle group.
After dry needling, the treated areas are mobilised and, if appropriate, additionally treated manually. Over the following days the areas should be stretched and kept warm. In addition, the treated muscles should not be subjected to maximum load for 2–5 days so that they can regenerate optimally.
