Shockwave therapy: treatment process

Video: shockwave therapy in Vienna

In this video, owner and physiotherapist Dino Durdevic explains exactly what shockwave therapy is, which complaints this form of therapy can help you with and how it is carried out.

1

Initial diagnosis and consultation

A doctor or physiotherapist first makes the diagnosis and assesses whether shockwave therapy is suitable for you specifically. Your treatment plan is discussed, and possible risks as well as your expectations as a patient are clarified.

2

Preparation and localisation

The area of the body to be treated is prepared by applying a lubricating gel that optimises the transmission of the shockwave. The affected area is located precisely, often by palpation or imaging techniques.

3

Carrying out the treatment

The physiotherapist or doctor places the shockwave device on your skin. The shockwaves are delivered to the affected area at controlled intervals, with the intensity adjusted to your pain sensitivity.

4

Aftercare

Mild pain or swelling can occur after the session. Your physiotherapist may recommend cooling and simple painkillers. You also receive instructions on aftercare and on possible complementary therapies.

5

Progress monitoring / follow-up treatments

Your healing process is monitored regularly.

Since several sessions are often necessary to achieve lasting results, your physiotherapist or doctor decides – based on your individual progress – whether and to what extent further sessions are required. This way your therapy is always adapted to your needs.

Shockwave Therapy Vienna: costs and reimbursement

A session of radial shockwave therapy, carried out as part of a physiotherapeutic treatment by our experienced doctors or physiotherapists, costs 110 €.

Focused shockwave therapy is carried out exclusively as a medical service by our doctors and costs €190 per session.

Partial reimbursement by the statutory health insurers is possible for radial shockwave therapy, as it is integrated into a physiotherapeutic treatment. As a rule you receive around 50% of the cost back. This requires a physiotherapy prescription, which you can obtain directly at the first consultation with our orthopaedic specialists if needed.

Reimbursement of around 50% by the statutory health insurers is also possible for focused shockwave therapy, as the service is provided by a doctor. Please note, however, that reimbursement depends on your health insurer and its policies.

In addition, many private health insurers cover part of the cost – depending on the terms of the respective contract.

Useful information about shockwave therapy

Shockwave therapy is a modern, non-invasive treatment method widely used in the treatment of chronic pain and musculoskeletal conditions. It uses high-energy sound waves to stimulate healing processes in the body and relieve pain. This therapy is used in particular for complaints such as heel spur, calcific shoulder or tendon inflammation.

With minimal side effects it offers you an effective alternative to invasive procedures and allows you a quick recovery.

How does shockwave therapy work?

Shockwave therapy sends high-energy sound waves specifically into the affected tissue. These sound waves are generated by a special device and transmitted to the skin through an applicator.

As soon as the shockwaves penetrate the tissue they create mechanical impulses that cause micro-injuries in the tissue. These micro-injuries stimulate the body’s natural healing process by improving circulation, encouraging the formation of new blood vessels and promoting cell regeneration. In addition, the shockwaves can break up calcification in the tissue, which makes it easier to break down calcium deposits.

A further effect of shockwave therapy is the stimulation of the body’s own pain receptors, which can lead to a reduction in the perception of pain.

Overall, shockwave therapy can help your body to reduce inflammation, regenerate tissue and relieve your pain without the need for a surgical procedure.

Effect of shockwave therapy

Shockwave therapy works by sending high-energy sound waves into the treated tissue. These shockwaves promote circulation and stimulate cell regeneration. The mechanical stimulation accelerates healing processes, reduces chronic inflammation and breaks down calcification. The therapy can also influence the pain receptors, which leads to pain relief.

Overall, shockwave therapy can help you to regenerate damaged tissue and relieve chronic pain.

Advantages of shockwave therapy

Shockwave therapy offers you several advantages:

It is a non-invasive treatment method that requires no surgical procedure. It promotes the healing of chronic inflammation and pain, particularly if you suffer from tendon and muscle problems.

Through improved circulation and cell regeneration it accelerates the healing processes in your body. The therapy also generally requires only a few sessions and involves little downtime, so you can quickly return to everyday life.

Shockwave therapy is a proven method with few side effects and is particularly effective in the treatment of heel spur, calcific shoulder and similar complaints.

Is shockwave therapy painful?

Some patients may find shockwave therapy uncomfortable or painful, particularly in the first sessions.

The pain varies depending on the intensity of the shockwaves, the region of the body treated and individual pain sensitivity. It is often described as a feeling of pressure or intense tapping. However, the pain usually decreases over the course of the therapy as the body becomes accustomed to the treatment.

After the therapy you may experience temporary pain or slight swelling, which as a rule subsides quickly. Many patients find the pain bearable, particularly given the potential benefit of the treatment.

When must shockwave therapy not be used?

Shockwave therapy must not be used if certain contraindications apply to you, for example:

  • Acute inflammation and infections:
The therapy should not be used for acute inflammation in the treatment area, as the shockwaves could worsen the inflammatory process. For chronic inflammation, however, shockwave therapy can support healing.

  • Tumours:
Where tumours are present in the treatment area the application is contraindicated, as the shockwaves could affect tumour growth.

  • Blood clotting disorders:
If you suffer from blood clotting disorders or take blood-thinning medication, you should refrain from the treatment in order to avoid the risk of bleeding.

  • Pacemaker:
If you have a pacemaker, shockwave therapy should not be applied near the device in order to avoid possible interference.

  • Pregnancy:
Shockwave therapy should not be used during pregnancy, particularly not in the pelvic area, in order to avoid possible risks to the unborn child.

  • Growth plates in children and adolescents:
Where growth plates (epiphyseal plates) have not yet closed – for example at joints and on the skull – caution is required, as the shockwaves could affect bone growth.
