What is Dry Needling?

Dry Needling is a specialised physiotherapy technique for treating myofascial trigger points — painful muscle knots. Using very fine, sterile needles, these points are specifically stimulated to release tension, reduce pain, and normalise muscle activity. No medication is injected.   +43 1 8925 369 Book appointment

Process & effect of Dry Needling

1

Assessment

Treatment begins with a thorough physiotherapy assessment to identify the affected muscles and relevant trigger points. Posture, mobility, and pain response are reviewed, and the muscles are tested manually. 2

Dry Needling

Fine acupuncture-style needles are then precisely placed into the affected muscle areas. The muscles may be moved during treatment. A successful puncture can cause a brief muscle twitch, depending on the muscle group. 3

Aftercare & what to do afterwards

After Dry Needling, the treated areas are mobilised and, if needed, treated manually as well. Over the following days, the treated areas should be stretched and kept warm. The treated muscles should also not be maximally strained for 2–5 days, to allow optimal recovery.

Effect

Dry Needling can effectively release muscle tension, reduce pain, and improve mobility. It also stimulates local blood circulation and positively affects the nervous system through the release of the body’s own endorphins. Many patients report a noticeable improvement and faster recovery after just a few sessions. Physiotherapeutin Laura Martin, BSc.

Frequently asked questions

How much does Dry Needling cost? The cost is included in the physiotherapy treatment and varies depending on the length of the session. Who is allowed to perform Dry Needling in Austria? Dry Needling may only be performed by appropriately trained physiotherapists. Is Dry Needling the same as acupuncture? No. Dry Needling is based on Western medicine and specifically targets muscular trigger points, not meridians. How long does it take for Dry Needling to work? Many patients notice an improvement after the very first treatment; several sessions can be beneficial. Is Dry Needling painful? A brief stinging or pulling sensation may occur, which usually subsides quickly. Is Dry Needling covered by health insurance? Indirectly, yes — as part of a physiotherapy treatment with a medical prescription, partial reimbursement is possible. Who should not receive Dry Needling?

  • Patients with the following secondary conditions:
    • Coagulation disorders
    • Psychiatric conditions
